What makes jewels into something special
Whether in silver, bronze or gold, jewelry is definitely essential accessories to give that final touch to our look. However, nothing makes jewelry more special than the emotional meaning they have for us.
From the moment a jewel becomes ours, it ceases to be just an accessory of beauty, as time goes on it carries with it special moments, thus creating a true story.
When I was a child I remember that my best friend always had a gold necklace around her neck. Once, as I was playing with her, it broke and we could not find it anywhere. My friend was inconsolable, she could not stop crying.
At the time I didn’t understand why, I thought my friend was crying for fear of getting spanked by her mother. I remember trying to comfort her by saying, “Do not cry is just a necklace, I’ll help you explain to your mother that you did not lose it on purpose.”
My friend looked at me and said, “You do not understand, this was my grandmother’s. My grandmother gave to my mother the last time they were together, before they got separated because of the war. This necklace is the only thing my mother has that reminds her of my grandmother.” It was the first time I understood the true meaning of jewelry, at the time I was 10 years old. Having lost my mother during the war, I wished at that moment that I had something tangible that had been hers.
Something that reminded me of her existence.
We then decided that we would not go home without the necklace. We knew it would not be an easy task to find it in the middle of the sand but, luckily two hours later we find the necklace. We hugged, wept, laughed and jumped so happily, not because my friend was no longer in trouble, but because she had found the jewel that by its meaning was precious to her and to her family.
So when Wonderlust + Co contacted me to compose some jewelry from their new make it yours collection, I automatically thought of creating something that had some very special meaning for me, just like my friends necklace meant to her. The make it yours collection allows you to choose a simple necklace as the base and make it your own by composing it with different charms to your liking.
I’ve missed my mother my whole life. To this day, I still have the desire to have something palpable that belonged to her. Therefore, with “make it yours”, I decided to create something thinking of her. I used a key and the letter J which is the first letter of her name, Judith-Bonga. The necklace length goes up to my heart because, she is and always has been and always will be in my heart. Although I do not remember her physically, she has always lived in my heart.
I hope you have enjoyed it and do not forget to dream and always fight for the fulfillment of your dreams.
