A weekend with the kids at Sparks Hostel in Rotterdam
Whoever said that traveling is good for the soul, couldn’t be more right. Whether traveling in or out of the country, traveling is probably one of the healthiest things for our soul. After a long time without traveling, we spent the previous weekend at Sparks Hostel in Rotterdam. And although it was only three days, it was amazing what these days did to our souls. In addition to being super fun, we came back much more relaxed and, with lots of energy. I almost forgot how good it is to get out of our comfort zone, our responsibilities a little, and go somewhere different.
Before I was a mother I couldn’t wait for my vacation to travel. I had few responsibilities and my priorities were naturally different. But after becoming a mother, obviously, my responsibilities increased and my priorities changed too. Traveling was no longer on the list of priorities. But thank God, the children grew up and very fast. Now that my first daughter is 11 years old and the last child is 5 years old, everything became much easier and traveling returned to our priority list.
We started this weekend in Rotterdam. Although we have been there several times before because of my job as a blogger, for some time we wanted to go there just for fun and to explore de city. However, between wanting to do something and really doing it, there are certain things that need to happen first, like finding the perfect place for me and my children within my budget. Fortunately for us, it was not so difficult to find the perfect place. We stayed at Sparks Hostel and we couldn’t have made a better choice for the weekend. At first I was a little apprehensive, because for those who don’t know, a hostel, being a cheaper option, is the preferred accommodation for young travelers. And as I was with children I thought that it might not be the most ideal. But I couldn’t be more wrong. Sparkel Hostel is also perfect for families with children who want to spend a few days in Rotterdam.
The Hostel offers family rooms with a double bed, a bunk bed for two, with bed linen and towels included, a private bathroom, hairdryer, and free WiFi. As if that weren’t enough, the rooms have a wonderful view of the city center. My kids loved it, for them it was a party having to sleep all in one room. After some fights over who’s going to sleep upstairs and who’s going to sleep down, they all snuggled up in my bed. Leaving me with the bothering job to put each one of them back to their beds in the middle of the night. But well, these is what mothers are supposed to do!
However, it wasn’t just the room that was awesome, the atmosphere of the hostel itself is super warm and cozy. The warm colors used in the decoration of the rooms and reception, the common area and open kitchen, makes it a super pleasant place to be. Guests usually meet there, chat and make friends.
The “checkmate” was the open kitchen and the possibility that the hostel offers to prepare a meal if you feel like it. For those who are mothers, they know how boring it is when we go to a place where the food is already made and the children do not want to eat this or that. Well, I have three children and, each with his own food issues (lol). Especially at breakfast, I have one that only eats flakes, another that doesn’t dispense a good bowl of porridge and another that loves to eat a good salad and omelet with me. So, being able to make their breakfast there, I found it super practical and ideal.
Nevertheless, the Sparks Hostel is located in the city center just 5 minutes from the central station and a short distance from the best sightseeing’s of Rotterdam. Cinemas, restaurants, supermarkets, shops and etc., everything is very close. Which was perfect for us, since what we really wanted was to explore the city a little more. And of course, in addition to the family rooms, the Sparks hostel also offers different types of well-designed and cozy dorms, with personalized bunk beds. Each bed has a night-light, sockets and large cabinets for luggage. Our bunks have “real” stairs, which means: there is no need to climb! In addition, all the upper beds are equipped with ‘sliding doors’, which offers more privacy to the guests. It has dorms for 4, 6, 8 and 12 people. Guests have the option of staying in a female, male or mixed dorm.
